Ping by Karsten 'MOD IV' Redwood City Manganese Bronze Mallet Putter
"One of the most difficult Redwood City models to find, this putter was made with a straight and offset shaft. The offset version, strangely enough, was face-balanced or close to it. Karsten obviously didn't intend for this feature to exist purposely, since he didn't manufature facebalanced putters until 1993. These putters' original grips were the Golf Pride rubber/pistol black, red, white and green," Bobby Grace says of the Mod IV Redwood City putters on page 9 of his 'Guide to Collecting Rare Ping Golf CLubs' above a 14 oz head version photo. This version has neither a 14 for the head weight or an 'A' after the 'Mod IV' sole designation.
This vintage golf putter is an early production model manufactured by Ping by Karsten, identified as the MOD IV center-shafted mallet putter. The head is cast in manganese bronze and features the iconic slotted sole design. The club is fitted with a stepped steel shaft and a vintage brown rubber grip. The back of the putter head is marked with PING BY KARSTEN on the top rail and MOD IV on the right side. Within the lower cavity, the following text is embossed: PAT. PEND., P.O. BOX 503, REDWOOD CITY, CALIF. The grip is marked GOLF PRIDE with a GP logo within a triangle. This Redwood City geographic marking dates the item to the earliest years of production at Karsten Solheim's original California workshop. 34 3/4"
