Phil Mickelson Signed 2005 PGA Winning Final Putt Golf Ball & Glove w/LOP & JSA Letter
That's right, this was THE ball that Phil Mickelson chipped up and out of the nasty rough to a tidy 2 feet for birdie on the 72nd hole (-4) wearing THE glove - a near walk-off win over runners-up Steve Elkington and Thomas Bjorn by the slimmest of margins in regulation! The three dot black sharpie marked Callaway HX Tour 56 '3' golf ball in this lot represents a very special category of golf memorabilia that is very rarely for public consumption, a Major Winner's final round marked and used golf ball; this sourced from Doug Steffen, Baltusrol Director of Golf. Almost unbelievably, Phil Mickelson signed his 2005 time-period signature across it with the inscription '05 PGA.' Both the ball and glove are accompanied by a full letter of provenance from JSA verifying the signatures, including the clarification that the inscription on the ball was also ruled to be in Phil Mickelson's hand. Why 'almost unbelievably'? Lefty has NEVER, yes using the word never carefully, signed a golf ball during his pro career for the general public at a hotel, a sponsors lunch and certainly not at a tournament site. Well there are extremely rare exceptions to that rule, and those uninformed collectors who rightfully question the authenticity of any Mickelson signed golf ball should consider these. 1) Lefty has gone on record stating that he signed 12 golf balls for each of his children the day they were born and locked them away 2) Don Bobilo, the TPC Scottsdale Caddy Master whom he became very close with, was presented with a handful of signed logo balls by Phil 3) This lot, a very different situation factoring in Phil Mickelson's 2005 PGA Championship WINNING golf ball! This signature formation is drastically different, and much more practiced than the somewhat unpracticed formation that graced balls until 1996.
"Doug, Thanks for all your help! -Phil Mickelson" the champion heartily inscribed in black sharpie to the worn palm his 2005 PGA Championship winning golf glove tastefully positioned in a shadowbox next to Phil's winning signed, marked and inscribed '05 PGA' Callaway HX Tour 56 '3' golf ball. The 'Doug' that Mickelson was thanking was Baltusrol's longtime Director of Golf Doug Steffen, whom he handed both his winning glove and ball to after his 2nd major win's conclusion on August 15, 2005. Steffen began his career at Baltusrol as the head of the bag shop back in 1977 and then returned 20 years later in 1997 as Baltusrol's eight head professional. The 'help' Mickelson was referring to was detailed in the New York Post and, in part, lead to his victory. Mickelson referred to Steffen by name. "Doug Steffen helped me with some local knowledge when I came here a couple weeks ago," Mickelson was quoted as saying. "The most obvious was the putt on No. 4. I’ll bet everybody missed that putt on the left. It looks like it breaks right. The mountain is to the left so it should go right. It doesn’t. It goes left. "He altered my read by four or five inches, and I ended up making it dead center. That was a big putt." That was a big putt and this is a big lot.
Both a signed letter of provenance from Doug Steffen and the aforementioned James Spence Authentication (JSA) full letter of authentication #YY70554 comes with this lot. 15" x 18"
