Pearson Rake/Water Iron in Excellent Condition with 'M.S.R.' Head Stamp
Experimental clubmaker John S. Pearson cut his teeth on James Braid's benches making clubs along with professional and groundskeeper at West Middlesex Golf Club prior to coming to America from London, were he was club professional at The Kirkwood in Camden, South Carolina and competed in the early stages of American golf tournaments. In addition to Pearson's "Excelsior" putter was this rake/water iron. The face grooves were not only meant to allow the head to travel through the water, but they were also to create backspin like a deep grooved dedstop. The bold design was bit of a risk for Pearson, and was not received as well as he had hoped by the time-period golfing community. That and the fact that they were deemed illegal and tended to break on long approach shots, few were to be had by the consumer and this mashie remains a difficult find 100 years later. This example remains in good condition, with capital letters "M.S.R." 36 3/4"
