Payne Stewart Signed Match Used NFL San Francisco 49ers Sweater w/Sponsors
There will never be another like Payne Stewart. The charismatc fashion-forward Stewart, or backward depending on how you look at it, signed a unique 6-year sponsorship deal with the National Football League (NFL) in 1989. This contract paid him to wear NFL-themed outfits at PGA Tour events. His outfit would routinely reflect the logo and color scheme of the closest pro football team geographically to that week's tournament host club; as if the fans needed anymore reason to pull for the golfer. This styling included, of course, his first of three major championships - the 1989 PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes in which he sported the Chicago Bears. Payne's 1991 US Open Sunday victory outfit? That patriotic Antigua outfit would be for the upcoming Super Bowl XXVI held in Minneapolis, smart to deviate from the Minnesota Vikings purple and yellow.
This documented player-sponsor logic would lead us to believe that Payne Stewart's signed match-worn San Francisco 49ers red pullover in this lot was likely worn in a California golf tournament. More specifically Stewart donned it in Northern California and perhaps the Northern California Pebble Beach Golf Links venue, as it was chosen over San Diego Chargers or Los Angeles Rams branded attire. The Antigua Sport size large pullover contains the embroidered 49ers logo on the breast, below the perfectly placed and formed flowing black sharpie signature from its initial owner. Stewart's secondary sponsor Lexus is branded in black thread on his right shoulder - unique attributes to Payne's closet. This article of clothing was donated by Payne Stewart for a Springfield, Missouri (his hometown) silent auction in the mid-1990's, with a single owner - its consignor. Antigua Sport is both in the collar cloth tag and embroidered on the backside. Gentle and welcomed signs of use, but not abuse, are present including slight discoloration on the white stripe of a sleeve end shown in the third photo. Carry on his legacy in your collection.
