Paul Azinger's 1992 Masters Par-3 Tournament Hole No. 5 Nearest The Flagstick Trophy Pitcher
“Only trophies and souvenirs are offered as prizes, but the (Par-3 Contest) competition is keen, and the contest attracts large numbers of patrons,” Augusta National co-founder Clifford Roberts wrote of the Par-3 Contest in his book, The Story of the Augusta National Golf Club. The winner receives a crystal bowl, and those closest to the pin on each hole get this stunning pitcher.
Paul Azinger was nearest to the flagstick on the 5th hole in 1992 and was presented with this engraved Masters cut glass display item of utmost quality to any collection. 6" tall to the top of the handle, with a width from the spout to the handle of 7 1/4".
It was in 1958 that the Par-3 Course was designed at the Augusta National by architect George Cobb and Clifford Roberts. The day before the Masters starts, the Par 3 contest (a tradition begun in 1960) is held on that course. “It is, in fact, much more popular than the clinics, driving and iron play contests, and trick-shot entertainment staged on Wednesdays prior to the existence of our par-three course.” Roberts would no doubt be pleased with how the Par-3 Contest has grown. It is now televised live, and the demand for tickets is nearly as great as for a tournament day.

After 10 PGA Tour wins and 12 seasons playing at the highest level, 'The Zinger' broke through in a major way when he captured the 1993 PGA Championship at Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio. Four birdies on the final seven holes to card a back 30, locked-in was an understatement. That eventual playoff triumph over Greg Norman would pair with his four Ryder Cups as a player and another captaining the victorious 2008 United States team at Valhalla atop his meritorious on-course resume.
The voice of a generation of golf, Paul Azinger began his television career alongside Johnny Miller at NBC in 1995 while recovering from chemotherapy after conquering non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer. Awarded the 2000 PGA Tour Comeback Player of the Year after his 12th and final win at The Sony Open, Azinger would play several more successful years on the Tour before joining the booth again. In 2005 Azinger became lead analyst for most of the next two decades at ESPN/ABC Sports, Fox Sports and NBC/Golf Channel.
A walk-on at Brevard Community College in Florida's golf team in the late 1970's, Paul Azinger honed his craft to gain summer employment at Arnie's Bay Hill Golf Academy in Orlando. Exposure and a well-practiced game turned heads and extended a scholarship to the Division I Florida State University. While turning professional in 1981, it wouldn't be until the 1987 Phoenix Open when he would break through as part of a life-changing three-win campaign. He was only getting started.
