Original Water Color on Paper Pen & Ink Illustration with Artist Notes by Ionicus
Here is an original 'Chester Forgets Himself (The Wrecking Crew)' art piece. Best known under his pen name "Ionicus", illustrator and artist Joshua Charles 'J C' Armitage's (British 1913 - 1998) work was typically associated with book covers and internal illustrations for acclaimed golf author P.G. Wodehouse, and in 'Punch' magazine, beginning in 1944, for over four decades - the preferred British source for humor and satire of the time.
Ionicus' own story dates back to 1913 in the golf-rich region of Hoylake in Cheshire, England. Naturally golf content became an integral part of Ionicus' portfolio. Two of Ionicus' most famous cover designs have been for the Golf Classics "The Heart of a Goof", and "Uneasy Money".
Armitage was a golf enthusiast, and was a longtime member of Royal Liverpool Golf Club (hdcp 15).
Golf art collectors will have a unique opportunity in this auction lot, with the chance to own a rarely seen original watercolor painting, included in the subsequent book "Chester Forgets Himself", by the late Ionicus. Armitage's own notes, including the Title, are written on the margin of the image frame. The watercoloring from the hand of Ionicus compliments the detailed pen and ink portraying golfers that aren't afraid to show emotion or simply motion in the case of a swinging golfer. Armitage' personal signed letter is included.
This seldom seen authentic J. C. Armitage art, with personalized notations, is in well preserved condition and suitable for framing!
