Telling Bobby Jones' origin story overlaps with that of Alexa Stirling, the scene set at East Lake Golf Club and the common figure that of a great teacher named Stewart Maiden. "The best luck that I ever had in golf was when Stewart Maiden came from Carnoustie to be pro at the East Lake Club. Stewart had the finest and soundest style I have ever seen. Naturally I did not know this at the time, but I grew up swinging like him. I imitated his style, like a monkey I suppose", Bobby Jones came to the realization as he spoke glowingly of his teacher later, as quoted in 'The Sons of Carnoustie Golf Club.' Jones and Stirling were the best golfers that the game had to offer and it was because of Maiden. Fletcher recognized this, telling the story of his tutelage, the champions he made and the course that it happened at in this original oil painting.
Renown golf industry artist Robert Fletcher has dedicated nearly 40 years to refining his craft in the fine arts. His works are exhibited on the historic grounds of Cherry Hills and Colorado Golf Club in bronze busts, prior to participating as a lead artist in a recent Golf Heritage Society Meeting art workshop. His most recent success was work that was used as a tribute to the course architect team of Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw at the Colorado Golf Club. Robert has a unique style, with a mix of realism and and shadowing resulting in an almost a mythic result. A perfectionist, Fletcher's artistic touch starts long before the brush is dipped in paint. Fletcher shared that he used raw stretched linin from Utrecht, Netherlands which is wetted and then applied with specialized rabbit skin glue prior to the artwork starting.
