Original 1938 Helen Lengfield Post Swing Chalk On Board Drawing by A.D. Mills
Chalk on board by renown illustrator A.D. Mills, fame came easily for the preferred illustrator and photographer for leading publication 'The Fairway.' Subject, post-swing Helen Lengfeld appreciated its likeness to herself so much that this was kept in her personal collection. Much of Mill's work was produced in the 1930's, with this 1938 Lengfeld depiction likely published in that publication then. Shadowing and light source are both points of emphasis for this white and black chalk drawing, with motion shown by line repetition. The Helen Lengfeld Collection
With her dear mother's encouragement, Helen Lengfeld put down the baseball bat and picked up a golf club in 1906 at the age of eight years old. Historians today look back on the equipment change as a significant event in women's golf, as the trailblazing Northern California native Lengfeld has since left a far-reaching lasting impact on the game and society. The natural athlete was one of the first, and youngest, members of the Jewish founded Donald Ross designed country club titled Beresford CC in 1912. Discrimination had barred these individuals from the then existing social country clubs in the Bay Area, but could not stop them. The club has since changed its name to Peninsula Country Club and Lengfeld spent two decades as the Club's Women Champion - the rest of her life a proud member.
As a maturing player Lengfeld won the 1926 San Francisco Women's Championship, while simultaneously establishing the WGA of Northern California - only to go on to win the organization's inaugural championship. These tournaments would be that of extreme significance, leading to the creation of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA). President of the WGA of Northern California in 1947, Lengfeld would use her editorial skills to publish the 'Golfer Magazine' or 'National Golfer' in 1949. Helen Lengfeld went on to then start the three California Women's Amateur Championships and founded the United Voluntary Services Golf Swing Clubs, providing military veterans therapy and rehabilitation through the game of golf - always generous with her time. Decades later 'Golf Digest' would rank her as one of the 5 most influential women in the history of the game. The larger-than-life non fiction story continues through these personal artifacts of Helen Lengfeld's life as a golfer, philanthropist and humanitarian, It is our distinct honor to present The Helen Lengfeld Collection.
