National Golf Links of America Used Painted Wooden Tee Sign 'Plateau' Hole No. 11 Marker
One of designer CB MacDonald's original holes no. 11 “Plateau” features a dogleg to the left and is where this sign prior to being retired and replaced once stood. Off the tee shot, members of the highly exclusive and prestigious club view trees to the right side flanked by a total of six bunkers on both sides. The MacDonald hole without outside inspiration for duplucation is characterized by the green, as it is concaved near the center and a plateau on the left front half. As an added element, the green is also guarded by three pot bunkers. This rarity in its own right boasts aesthetic appeal in addition to its origin story, a colorful wooden tee sign marking the Hole No. 11 'Plateau.' The sign is constructed from a rectangular wooden plank featuring decorative saw-tooth or notched ends, finished in a dark brown stain or paint contrasting the cream, green, and red. The top line reads PLATEAU. The middle line reads NO. 11 STROKES 8. The bottom line displays PAR 4 followed by tee box yardage indicators: 408 yds. in green paint and 432 yds. in red paint. Two metal ground spikes are secured to the bottom edge for installation.
The private 18 hole National Golf Links of America course covering 253 acres is located on Peconic Bay in the Town of Southampton, New York. Founded in 1908 under the leadership of Charles B. Macdonald, construction began on the course with Seth Raynor's assistance. MacDonald had a plan to build a first class course which in essence 'cherry picked' the better ideas already put forth by courses in paces like England and Scotland. From the care he devoted to the selection of the property to the refinements he made to it over the next 30 years, he was determined to build the most noteworthy course in the United States.
