Mary Pickford 1920's Film Star & Riviera Signed Vintage Mesh Pattern Golf Ball

"Among the earliest celebrities to play golf were silent screen stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The couple, who lived in on a sprawling 18-acre estate in Beverly Hills that the media dubbed Pickfair, joined Riviera in the mid-1920s and could frequently be seen playing there." The PGA Tour article later explains that the extremely influential Hollywood power couple was followed by Charlie Chaplin and other leading celebrities of the roaring 20's to The Riviera Country Club. When the Los Angeles Open was first played at The Riviera in 1929 Mary Pickford and husband Douglas Fairbanks added ten percent to the purse, a cool $1,000.

Contained in this lot is none other than a Mary Pickford 1920's Film Star & Riviera Signed Vintage Mesh Pattern Golf Ball. Strong ink does not do Fairbank's signature on this mesh ball justice, as the difficult writing surface absorbed the ink like a sponge. Few were more important in the history of The Riviera Country Club than Pickford and bringing golf into the celebrity and pop culture sphere. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
