Low Amateur Danny Edwards' 1973 The Open at Royal Troon GC Contestant Badge
Most challenging of all major championship credentials is the contestant badge - this exemplar issued to Low Amateur Danny Edwards for the 1973 Open Championship at Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. Decorated amateur Danny Edwards would play in not just his first Open Championship that week, but his first major. The battle at Royal Troon, in Scotland not far from Glasgow, would prove to be a worthy one for the 22-year-old Edwards carding rounds of 75-75-71-75 and a 296 total to finish a T-39 and more importantly the prestigious honor of Low Amateur. "Decorated" was the descriptor for the 1973 Walker Cup team member and 4-year Oklahoma State collegiate golfer, as Danny Edwards had captured both the North and South and Southeastern Amateur in 1972 prior to his Open Championship debut. While Edwards went pro later in the 1973, he would earn his PGA Tour card two years later in 1975. Champion Golfer of the Year Tom Weiskopf was crowned in 1973, his career defining major championship by way of a three stroke victory over Johnny Miller and Neil Coles - Jack Nicklaus a stroke back of those two for 4th. Once used for the entirety of the week, the metal contestant badge employs the traditional R&A shallow relief design with royal blue accent perimeter that collectors are accustomed to. A signed letter of provenance from Danny Edwards comes with this lot.
The Danny Edwards Collection
Flags, tracks and Danny Edwards. The 9-time champion professional golfer crossover race car driver's resume will never be duplicated. His autobiography titled 'Driven', co-authored by Bob Denney, used multiple meanings of the word - very fitting for the ambitious winner. Later an entrepreneur extraordinaire, Edwards developed/ founded Royal Grip Co., CEO of GreenFix Golf the innovative repair tool company, and founder of The Chipping Equation. Part of a golfing family, his younger brother David joined him on the tour in 1978. Past President of the Tour Players Association, Danny Edwards, notched five PGA Tour wins: 1977 Greater Greensboro Open, 1980 Walt Disney World National Team Championship, 1982 Greater Greensboro Open, 1983 Miller High Life GCO, and 1985 Pensacola Open. Prior to his PGA Tour card the decorated amateur was a 1972 Walker Cup Team Member, 1972 North and South Amateur champion, and 1973 Open Championship Low Amateur. Danny Edwards made 25 major championship cuts and had his card for 14 seasons prior to mastering other facets of life in business. His unprecedented story is furthered by The Danny Edwards Collection offering, proudly shared by The Golf Auction.
