1939 Press Photo US Open - Byron Nelson and Ed Dudley-This crystal clear 6" x 8" ACME wireservice photo is in top condition with only minor flaw being a chip to the right hand corner. Displayed on the verso side you will find traditional stamping along with cutline description paragraph still intact from when this photo was taken on June 8, 1939 at the Philadelphia Country Club. The photograph was snapped just moments before Ed Dudley and Byron Nelson hit their first shots of the 1939 U. S. Open. Nelson would go on to win the '39 Open Championship, but he had a long way to go from the moment captured here as he won in a double playoff that year. He tied Denny Shute and Craig Wood over the regulation 72 holes at 284. Then Nelson's first 18-hole playoff round of 68 was good enough to take out Shute. Finally a round of 70 by Nelson in the second 18-hole playoff against Wood earned Byron the Championship in the longest contested U.S Open Championship in history.
