Gary Player's Record-Breaking 2008 Masters Tournament Used Callaway Golf Bag - 51st!
Callaway Golf Company knew the story and their assignment: produce a Masters Themed bag for their staff member Gary Player in celebration of his unprecedented feat. One that looks good on television from all angles, specifically, with extensive coverage coming their way. Afterall Gary would be using it for his practice rounds, as well as the Thursday and Friday Masters Tournament rounds. Callaway, then Player's bag, club and ball manufacturer, decided on a white bag with (Masters) green writing, accents and yellow zippers on the Big Bertha tour bag. CitiBank's sponsorship would be exhibited just below the Black Knight Gary Player embroidered logo on the large pocket of the bag caddie Dave King pulled clubs from for his boss at the 2008 Masters.
Records are meant to be broken. A testament to longevity and greatness, The Masters Tournament' first international champion surpassed his friend and fellow Big 3 member Arnold Palmer the first week of April in 2008 when trailblazer Gary Player contested in his record-breaking 51st tournament in Augusta. It would be only the 72nd edition of the tournament. The Augusta National fixture with the comic book moniker Black Knight was in the field for each contest from 1957 until 2008, with nearly perfect attendance over that stretch - absent only when he was recovering from surgery in 1973. He would win the next year. In the six decades of the tournament Player finished top-5 on 15 occasions and slipped on the green jacket in 1961, as well as 1974 and 1978. After receiving the sport coat for the first time in 1961 he was hesitant to bring it back, responding to Co-founder Clifford Robert's inquiry at the tournament in 1962 with "Well, Mr. Roberts, if you want it, why don’t you come and fetch it?" With invitations being sent to fewer and fewer past champion mailboxes each year, it would be fair to say that this record is not in jeopardy. Fittingly fellow South African Trevor Immelman captured the 2008 tournament. Player would call it quits the next year, playing in his final Masters in 2009. Still an important part of the tournament, Player would be named the Masters Honorary Starter in 2012 with his friends Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer to fill out the 'Big 3' a position he currently holds with Jack and now Tom Watson. A signed letter from the family comes with this lot.
The museum quality bag before you made history on April 10th, 2008 - Gary's record-breaking 51st Masters. This fine Gary Player original was obtained from a Player family member. A signed letter of provenance will accompany the lot.

Place your bids now as this auction will close LOT BY LOT beginning at 10:00pm EDT Sunday, May 22nd. When placing your INITIAL bid in the auction, you must agree to the terms BEFORE confirming your bid. All items with multiple bidders in the auction will be eligible for the extended bidding period. Each lot will have its OWN COUNTDOWN CLOCK set for a 30-minute interval, and the clock will extend 30-minutes from the time of the most recently placed bid for that lot. If no bids are placed on that lot during a 30-minute period, the lot will close. Place your bids now!
1. You must place your initial bids BEFORE extended bidding begins to bid on the item in extended bidding
2. During extended bidding, you are allowed to bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. All lots with only ONE or NO BIDS will automatically close at 10pm EDT
4. All available lots will begin closing on a LOT BY LOT basis at 10pm EDT
