Circa 1892 Robert Anderson & Sons Crescent Head Patent Iron - First Patent for Center-Shafted Club

A forward-thinking golf club design vision was tested for the first time with this center hickory shafted on the patented Robert Anderson and Sons Crescent head. It was the first of many patent center shafted club. Stamping is on backside of head, near the attachment area. The unconventional patent iron is well known in the club collecting community. It is known as one of the most powerful driving cleeks, with a back of the head central shaft. There is slight upcurving on the club's sole ends. This stamping is legible after the 130 years, produced shortly after the British Patent issued on May 28, 1892. Maker Robert Anderson spoke about the crescent head: "Concentrating the weight of the club head near to the end and to the line of the shaft...obtain(s) a more powerful driving club." This is a nice example of the 19th century club and one that will surely stand out nicely in any vintage club archival.
