Circa 1895-1905 Tom Morris Sr. Ladies Lofter Made by Tom Stewart - ALT Owner's Initials on Head

Tom Stewart's lofter bearing Old Tom Morris' stamp creates a tandem that is hard not to gravitate towards. This specific stamp of the serpent sandwiched by Tom Morris and St Andrews indicates that this club was produced as either a ladies or children's club. Stamping has been preserved, with "L" ladies club identifier and "ALT" initials likely belonging to the original owner.

Tom Morris, affectionately known as 'Old Tom', was a 19th century pioneer of golf. The British Open winner, club maker, green-keeper, and course designer was perhaps the most influential figure in the history of golf. Allan Robertson taught Tom the golf trade, from making feathery golf balls to clubs. After leaving St. Andrews in 1851 to his new position at Prestwick Golf Club, he eventually returned in 1865. With the new skills learned at Prestwick, Tom went about rejuvenating St Andrews by establishing separate tee boxes on each hole, widening the fairways, enlarging the greens and building two new ones and actively managing the hazards. Tom introduced many of the course design ideas that are the blue print for today's modern designers, creating the 18 hole course (St Andrews had originally 22 holes) and having each nine holes return to the club house. 37 1/2"

Golf Club Historian and Author, Pete Georgiady, has reviewed this lot and approves of this description. Pete, along with Dick McDonough, co-authored "Great Golf Collections of the World" and while doing so personally examined and photographed many of the fine clubs owned by Will Roberto being offered here.

If you would like any additional pictures of the club we would be happy to to supply them, please inquire prior to March 3rd for sufficient time to guarantee a thorough response. Please use the attached card as merely a reference tool, as we have done additional research to best determine age of these vintage clubs and present them as such.
