Late 1880's Tom Stewart LH Lofter Made for William Henderson - Very Early Stewart Club

The preeminent clubmaking name Tom Stewart will live on for generations to come as a representation of excellence, and this is your chance to obtain what would be comparable to Tom Stewart's "rookie card." While you likely have a Stewart in your collection, it's rather unlikely that it was produced before this one was. Crafted at the beginning of the Tom Stewart tenure comes this club, widely regarded as the best steel club head maker from 1893 until 1932. The premiere name in clubmaking of his time Tom Stewart, the "W HENDERSON" recipient stamp is underlined by Stewart's patented stovepipe on this example. Stewart made club heads for the biggest names in golf at the time, like Old Tom Morris, the McEwans, the Auchterlonies, the Forgans, James Braid, Francis Ouimet, and Bobby Jones. "Of all the old Scottish cleek makers who worked during the wood shaft era, Tom Stewart was the most respected in his day and is the best know today. He was not the largest producer or the most innovative, but his high-quality products and his location in St. Andrews, where many great championships were held, brought him in contact with many of the elite players of the day," Louisville Golf stated on their website in regard to the legendary clubmaker. Well stated and only the tip of the iceberg when chronicling the successes of the great Tom Stewart. 39"

Golf Club Historian and Author, Pete Georgiady, has reviewed this lot and approves of this description.
