Circa 1840's-1850's John Jackson 'Jackson' Baffing Spoon - Choice Example!

A brilliant clubmaking mind of his time, the legend of John Jackson goes he was self-taught and never received an apprenticeship while honing his craft straight to the top. His superb work (1825-1872) speaks for itself, however is mentioned with the likes of Hugh Philip and Douglas McEwan.

For the discerning club collector who has long awaited an example of work from the maker John Jackson to come, your day has finally arrived. This Baffing Spoon example likely from the early gutty ball era has been preserved in fine condition, as closely depicted in the zoomed in accompanying lot photos that are hard to look away from. The Baffing Spoon or "Baffy" as some called it, was an approach wood that would be loosely equivalent to a 7 wood since replaced with a short iron. The ram's horn insert is tight to the sole, held by three unique wooden pegs. The lead weight bearing the strike marks from forming is equally as tight, giving the golfer added power behind their stroke. A strong "JACKSON" is stamped prominently into the crown of this club. This hooked face exhibits file marks. Jackson's clubs routinely finish with a realized price in the mid four-figures. This spoon will surely be ushered into the hierarchy of the winning bidder's refined club collection. 39"
