Sam Snead Signed 'Playoff in 1954 Masters' Over Ben Hogan Scored & Inscribed Scorecard
With great pleasure, and an assumed rye smirk, '54 champion Sam Snead signed, marked and inscribed his memorable 'Playoff in 1954 Masters' on this Augusta National Golf Club scorecard from the 18-hole Monday playoff round victory against wothry foe and defending champion Bantam Ben Hogan! This likely one-of-a-kind piece gives a hole-by-hole score for the head-to-head round, with the straw hat donning Snead firing a 70 to Hogan's 71 to win by the slimmest of margins. Slammin' Sammy wrote both his last name "Snead" as well as Hogan's on the top of each side. Sam Snead carried a two stroke cushion into the 90th and final hole, carding a bogey to Hogan's par. "Playoff in 1954 Masters - Sam Snead" signed and inscribed the 82-tournament winner on the bottom of this ANGC scorecard. It would be only the third of four 18-hole playoffs at The Masters Tournament. Third round leader Ben Hogan carried a 214 into the fourth round, needing to make up three strokes on Sunday. Snead did just enough, with a final-round 72 to Hogan's 75. The 18-hole sudden-death Masters Tournament playoff format was put into play in 1976, with the 36-hole playoff only used to determine the winner in 1935. In between there were five 18-hole playoffs to find the Masters Champion: (1942) - Byron Nelson, (1954) - Sam Snead, (1962) - Arnold Palmer, (1966) - Jack Nicklaus, and (1970) - Billy Casper. Slammin Sammy Snead claimed his third win at Augusta in dramatic fashion over the fellow golfing legend.
