Bobby Jones Multiple Page Hand-Written Thoughts For The Proper Golf Swing - JSA Full Letter
"One of the founders, and until now, the only president of the Augusta National Golf Club..." Bobby Jones jotted down with a ballpoint pen writing implement on this 'about the author' section in the third three handwritten pages in this lot. It called for a third person point of view and the professional lawyer and Augusta National Golf Club President/Co-Founder used it. Included in this sampling of significant content included over the three handwritten pages; from him questioning if there is a perfect swing to his observation of appreciation that "The golf swing has not yet been reduced to a mechanical action of great precision." Below is a transcription of the three lengthy lined pages of paper that Bobby Jones got his thoughts down on.
Page 1:
The writing of this book is the result of two motivations: one, to provide a chairside or bedside companion for the golfer and two, to record (for whatever value it may have), the knowledge of the game I have gained in a life time of joyous travail in exploring its many facets. The book is not offered as a teacher nor is it intended that it should be read straight through at one sitting, or at all for that matter. But rather would I hope that it might always be kept near at hand and provide a place where a little browsing might cause the next golfing outing to be more enjoyable to even the very best players. The golf swing has not yet been reduced to a mechanical action of great precision. I suggest this as the most comforting thought for the average golfer.
Page 2: To keep always in mind for such a realization may discourage any desire to compare his results (with) to those of professional and low handicap players. He might even be persuaded to ignore completely the "par" figures appearing on his score card as bits of completely irrelevant information. This whole business of swinging a golf club involves much in compromise and adjustment for both the physical construction and muscular capability of the player. I along with many others have written of the "correct" swing or method yet am not sure there is such a thing. The word "proper" might be more suitable but even here we should have to understand that a degree of divergence must be allowable. Perhaps we should concern ourselves only with the effectiveness for this is the thing that counts in a competitive game.
