Spalding Chick Fraser Jigger with Lard Whistler Drilled Metal Shaft

While the head of this club bears the name of MLB pitcher Spalding's Chick Fraser, playing professional baseball from 1896 to 1909 for eight different teams, the draw remains the iconic golf club shaft they call the "Whistler." Fraser's name is on the head attached to the end of this Lard Whistler drilled metal shaft. Allan Lard's patented club offered in this lot is one of the very first steel shafted irons. The "Whistler" Mid Iron gets it's name from swinging the club under certain conditions and achieving a 'whistle' sound. Allan Lard designed these “perforated” shafts that actually whistled when swung. They were produced by Spalding for only two years, 1918 and 1919. Often referred to “Lard’s Whistle Shaft” and has six sides literally filled with holes to lighten the shaft. Refer to the pictures to get a close-up view of the rare single piece of bored out steel used as the shaft. Six sided steel with many small holes in order to lighten the club, and heralded as "the club of the future" by Spalding, it was the prime option for those looking to achieve a perfect shaft. This example is in good condition. 38"
