Walter Hagen 1914 US Open Photos with Trophy & of Clubhouse - With Letter

In 1914 Walter Hagen won the first of his 11 major golf championships at Midlothian CC outside of Chicago by defeating home town favorite Chick Evans by one stroke. In fact he was the only golfer in the field to birdie the final hole in all four rounds, a record that still stands today. Here are three original photographs from that historic win. First is a photograph of 21 year old Hagen holding the US Open trophy. The photo measures approx. 5 inches by 7 inches. The image size is 3 1/4 x 6 and is laid down to the paper backing. Note that this same photograph was used for an article that appeared in the June 2014 Golf Collector's Society Bulletin by Michael Trostel from the USGA. There are two additional photographs laid down on the reverse that are also from that same event at Midlothian CC. They measure 5 inches by 7 inches as well. Note some spots on the top photo and some damage to the upper left of the bottom photograph. The bottom photograph shows the gallery surrounding the 18th green, possibly for the trophy presentation. The top photograph shows the golfers still on the green. Hagen would go on to open the door to all golf professionals and the first to make a million dollars. His name is still on golf apparel and clubs today. Very historic photographs for your collection. Hagen would also win the 1919 US Open and probably would have won more or at least finished high except that there was no U.S. Open held during 1917 and 1918 because of WW!. Ironically, Hagen almost did not go to Chicago for the 1914 US Open because he was hoping to get a major league contract with the Philadelphia Nationals baseball team. However a wealthy member of Rochester CC offered to pay his way. In winning he became the first start-to-finish golfer, without ties, in U.S. Open history. I am parting with some of my best Hagen items so that others can enjoy them.
