Horton Smith's 1937 Ryder Cup United States Team Issued 14k Chilton Pen & Pencil Set in Original Box

Luxury writing implement set maker Chilton was chosen by the PGA of America to craft the set seen here with a patent pending 14k Gold Wing-Flow calligraphy nib tip pen and matching pencil. With the common primary blackberry color scheme found on the casing and implements, Chilton added a gold-tone personalization for two-time Masters winner Horton Smith 'PGA Ryder Cup 1937' on the cap of the pen and 'PGA RCT 1937' on the pencil while both containing 'HS.' The 10 year anniversary of the inaugural Ryder Cup was contested across the pond at the Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club, watching Non-playing captain Walter Hagen guide the vising United States team to a dominant 8 to 4 victory over foes Great Britain. 84 years later the pen set is still in good condition, with evidence of Horton Smith's usage of the 14k gold pen seen in the 6th picture and the 'R' on the pencil not there. Personal items from golfers that have secured their place in the game's history have long been highly coveted.

The consigner of this pen set John McMillian included an interesting story of how he came upon it, with the hopes of the set going to the right collector that will appreciate it as much as he did. With extensive access to the then considered almost a blue collar PGA Tour in the 1950's and 1960's, this pen set's previous owner in John's Aunt, got to know brothers and PGA Champions Jay and Lionel Hebert. She was then introduced to Horton Smith, with a life-long friendship with Smith developing. Upon the Joplin Ghost's passing in 1964, Smith's family made a point to gift a few personal items of Horton's to the consignor's direct family. The journey this set has gone on can be seen in it, yet the museum quality display piece is just that. Nearly 70 years later, this personal Ryder Cup pen set from the Springfield, Missouri legend will be joining a new collection, likely as a conversation starter for years to come....especially in the month of April. Please note a signed letter of provenance from consignor John McMillian will come with this lot, with a copy of that letter seen here due to a shipping delay. McMillian's Aunt's name was omitted from this image, but will be included in the letter to the winning bidder.
