Most know the tragic story. The 1999 US Open at Pinehurst ended up being one of the last public on course appearances by Payne Stewart who would pass away in the fateful plane crash later that year on October 25. After the final ball rolled in the hole it became bigger than the game of golf, with Phil Mickelson talking with Payne side-by-side on the 18th green about the joys of being a father and the putt Payne made to clinch the tournament. First, we sure miss Payne with his exuberant style of play. The energy he brought to the game of golf was unmatched. Secondly his historic final win at Pinehurst will be a tournament that will not soon be forgotten. Artist J. Toepel channeled his passion through his paint brush, with a pleasing watercolor depiction of the Pinehurst clubhouse. With fond memories of the landmark and its tournament Payne Stewart carefully applied his large black marker signature to the middle of this piece, with each letter legible. Simply put; signed by the late Payne Stewart, this is a collectible that you may never see again. Framed to 25 1/8" x 20."
