Bobby Jones Signed Personal Print on Board Portrait Gifted to Personal Assistant Jean Marshall

Signed and inscribed by the legendary Bobby Jones with a personal message in ballpoint pen to his trusted long-time personal assistant Jean Marshall, proudly presented in lot #1 is this Thomas E. Stephens Print on Board of the Augusta National Golf Club Co-Founder in his green jacket. Bobby Jones inscribed the gift to Jean, and on the reverse is the following from Bobby: "Jean, I am immensely complimented by your treatment of my picture. Much love, Bob. Nov 6, 1968." Robert T. Jones Jr. was The Masters, from building Augusta National Golf Club the way he envisioned doing it to starting the "Invitation Tournament" in 1934. This took place four years after his 'Impregnable Quadrilateral' Grand Slam year of 1930 in which he won the US Open, US Amateur, Open Championship and British Amateur. Jones' early retirement from competitive golf shortly followed. Some are aware that Bobby Jones had tragically acquired the eventually fatal disease of Syringomyelia in 1929 during a thunderstorm. His symptoms showed up in 1950 and unfortunately increased in severity until his passing in 1971. Bobby relied on assistant Jean Marshall for many tasks he could no longer perform.

Thomas E. Stephens was widely regarded as the mid-century leader in portrait paintings of dignitaries, putting oil to canvas for the famous Bobby Jones mid-swing piece that Dwight D. Eisenhower recreated and presented to friend Bobby Jones. Stephens captured Bobby Jones as many remember him, with a confident look on his face and right at the artist. Legs crossed, Thomas Stephens used earth-tones for Jones and his surroundings allowing the green jacket to pop in color. Stephens' name is in the bottom left of the piece across a chair spindle. Frame measures 14 1/2" x 17." James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
