Horton Smith's Original 1958 PGA Golf Hall of Fame Induction Award Plaque


The PGA of America Hall of Fame originated in 1940 at the suggestion of famed sportswriter Grantland Rice. It is the highest honor that the PGA of America can bestow upon a member. The original charter class of '40 contained ten members. In 1993, the PGA of America ceased PGA World Golf Hall of Fame operations in Pinehurst and subsequently relocated to the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine , Florida. The highest award of career achievement in golf measures 13" x 17" in plague format. The complete text of the honor reads as follows "Awarded by the Professional Golfers Association of America to Horton Smith in recognition of his election to the PGA Golf's Hall of Fame in the year 1958. By the golf professionals and sports press of the nation as having made one of the outstanding contributions to golf in the history of the game." Some 60+ years after this award was bestowed to Horton it remains in excellent condition displaying only minor handling wear. Verso of plague carries manufacturers sticker from Scroll Studio of Chicago, the PGA headquarters were located there in the 1940's and for consistency of award they continued to use this manufacturer even after their headquarters moved to Florida in 1956. Deserving of prominent display in the most advanced collection or museum setting. A letter of from PGA Historian Bob Denney will accompany this lot.

All items that have received multiple bids in the auction will remain open until no items have received a bid within a 15 minute time period (at 10pm EST, the countdown clock will be adjusted to a 5 minute interval). Place your bids now!

1. You must place your initial bids BEFORE extended bidding begins in order to bid on the item in extended bidding
2. During extended bidding, you are allowed to bid only on items you PREVIOUSLY placed a bid on.
3. All lots that are active in extended bidding will close at the same time, and those with only ONE or NO BIDS will close at 9pm EST
