1837 J.M. Honey Ancient Heavy Iron - Club Championship Memento
"Good Lord It's Heavy", these were the words of a veteran club collector with 50 years of experience when this club was placed in his hands. This lot offers another blacksmith forged superb Heavy Iron, dated 1837, hailing from the famed Harry B Wood Collection.This distinguished club can be seen in plate #7 of Wood's book, 'Golfing Curios and the Like', 1910.This Ancient Heavy Iron which measures 41" in length is engraved in script on the back of the blade..."J M Honey 1837". The cleek is virtually unused, bearing a massive stiff hickory shaft and a well preserved original Sheepskin grip over listing grip, quite thick. Presents with a long 6 inch hosel displaying a stunning size nicking.
A fine example of an ancient iron and with undeniable provenance. Such is the quality of this club it could well have been made by an armourer rather than a blacksmith.
