Payne Stewart Hand-Signed Oct. 1st, 1987 Letter to PGA President R.J. Carpenter
"We have already begun to anticipate the challenge (Ryder Cup) in 1989, and I have set my sights on making the team." Hand signed in blue ink pen, Payne thanks PGA of America President R.J. Carpenter for the Ryder Cup gift after the 1987 Ryder Cup matches on his letterhead bearing his silhouette. Payne Stewart gained 2 points for the US Team that week, with a Sunday singles match 2 up victory over Spain's Jose Maria Olazabal. The patriotic Payne Stewart cherished his five US Ryder Cup Team appearances from 1987 until 1999, including 1989. Most know the tragic story. This ended up being the last public on course appearance by Payne Stewart who would pass away in the fateful plane crash less than a month later. This letter sheds additional light on his enthusiasm for The Ryder Cup matches, concluding in his signature.
