George Pietzcker Original Toned Vintage Gelatin Silver Print of Archie Compston
Contained in this lot is a George Pietzcker Original Toned Vintage Gelatin Silver Print of Archie Compston. Compston was known as an elite matchplay golfer from England. Chosen to participate in each of the first three Ryder Cup Matches for the British team in 1927, 1929 and 1931, Archie Compston was victorious over Gene Sarazen in his prime, and the English-man put the worst drubbing of his career on Walter Hagen by the score of 18 and 17 in an exhibition match. The posed George Pietzcker Photo of Archie Compston is complete with the customary Pietzcker embossing crimp on the lower right hand corner and Clemens Avenue St Louis studio stamp, as well as industry markings, on its reverse. George Pietzcker is of course well known in the golf industry as the leading photographer for the USGA in the early 20th century and having one of the most prestigious photography studios in the United States at the time.
