Bobby Jones Signed Handwritten 1933 Ryder Cup Team Members Endorsement Form
In 1933 the great Bobby Jones was asked to give a list of men for which he felt were deserving of a spot on the United States Ryder Cup team. In response, on his "Jones, Evins, Powers & Jones" Counselors at Law letterhead, Bobby Jones did not sugarcoat how he felt about golfers that may have not been performing up to his standards as of late. This letter is concluded with a flawless, full name "Robert T. Jones Jr." fountain pen signature. Stapled to the back the explanation to his choices are his choices 1-12, each US Ryder Cup team member's name written in "Honorary Vice-President" Jones' pen. This was conducted on Professional Golfers' Association of America letterhead. His thoughts on golfer Horton Smith prove especially interesting. Although Jones' was likely correct that as of December 22, 1932 Smith hadn't been able to "show much lately," he famously won the 1934 and 1936 Masters Tournaments at Bobby Jones' Augusta National Golf Club. Augusta National Golf Club would open only a few weeks after this letter was sent. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their full letter of authentication #BB52086 comes with this lot. A letter of from PGA Historian Bob Denney will accompany this lot.
