1896 AG Spalding & Bros Golf Player Die Cut Ad Stand Up Card by Koerner & Hayes of Buffalo
This 1896 Spalding advertising effort is thought to be one of the earliest golf cards produced. It was one of five Koerner & Hayes of Buffalo die cut cards in the set that featured different sports in which Spalding made equipment for. The reverse side of the card has instructions on how to play the game of golf and the goal of getting the gutta-percha ball into the 4 1/4 inch hole in as few of strokes as possible. In a marketing push, the card also humorously states that the Spalding Clubs are made by "Scotch" experts and "cannot be surpassed in make, shape, balance or finish." This golfer is dressed in a colorful manner and has a strong mustache. The 5" by 3" card has strong edges and is in good condition, with a small section of discoloration on the reverse where the stand up cardboard piece once was. It has one Spalding factory listed, in the city of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts.
