1972 Billy Burke Memorial Tournament Trophies Donated by Wife Marguerite Burke
1931 was Billy Burke's career year, as he not only won the 1931 US Open, but reached the semi-finals of the PGA Championship, won 4 other PGA events and was chosen for the US Ryder Cup Team. The 1931 US Open was one for the ages as he battled George Von Elm for an unheard of 72 playoff holes over two days to break the tie. In 1972 Billy Burke passed away in Clearwater, Florida. As a celebration of life, his widow Marguerite Burke helped put together a Billy Burke Memorial tournament that was played locally. She donated the trophy to the tournament, one that was won by Mrs. Gilbert Lindgren. The larger trophy is 12 1/2," with the smaller one being 11."
