Two-page typed signed letter from golf legend Bobby Jones to World War II hero Colonel James C. McGehee. Offered here is a lengthy letter of thanks for the Jones family visit to see the Colonel's family while stationed post-War in Rio de Janeiro, and a follow-up on the Colonel's desire for new club's and golf balls. The two had played a round at the beautiful Gavea course on Jones visit. Jones closes the letter with an interesting note "I hope that you will get up this way along about the time of the Masters Tournament." Jone's signature in closing is penned "Bob" depicting his friendship with the Colonel who he playfully addresses as "Doc". The letter (7 1/4 by 10 3/8 inches) displays two horizontal mailing folds, a undetermined stain on lower left, and staple in upper-left corner to attach both pages. The signature is extremely strong presenting at a ("10") strength coming in mid-life for Jones. The legendary golfer had also recently served his country in World War II as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army Air Force. James McGehee, who may have first met Jones while commanding the Georgia Aero Tech School in Augusta, would rise to a Major General in his military career. During World War II, McGehee commanded the 373rd Fighter Group overseas an outfit that was dubbed "McGehee's Killers" by the press. His military decorations included Legion of Merit with Two Oak Leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star medal and Air Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters. This correspondence was penned on Jones' personal letterhead "ROBERT TYRE JONES, JR. ATLANTA, GEORGIA". James Spence letter accompanies item certifying authenticity of Bobby Jones signature.
