1904 Ekwanok Country Club Independence Cup Winners Trophy with Staghorn Handles
The Independence Cup was an annual fixture at the Ekwanok Country Club (Included with this trophy is a postcard with course scenes and listing fixtures at Ekwanok for the year 1906 showing the Independence Cup as one of the annual events).
This 1904 Cup, awarded just 5 years after the club was established, was won by G. E. Morse from the Rutland Country Club.
The trophy is engraved on 3 sides. The front of the trophy is engraved “Ekwanok Country Club” with the club seal. The middle side is engraved “ Independence Trophy, Open Handicap, July 1-2-4, 1904. And the rear side “ First Prize, Won by G. E. Morse, Rutland Country Club
The trophy was finely crafted by John Frick (with their stamp to the bottom) and measures approx.. 6 ½’ tall x 8” wide at the handles.
A very impressive early Ekwanok trophy, awarded 121 years ago in the same year that Ekwanok member and course co-designer Walter J. Travis would be the first American to win the British Amateur championship. It was also the year that Ekwanok elected Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of President Lincoln, as the third president of the Club.
