1930 The Amateur Golf Championship at St. Andrews Program - Bobby Jones Grand Slam

Launching what was unequivocally the pinnacle of sport's individual performance over the next five months, Bobby Jones' 1930 conquest of the 'Home of Golf' St. Andrews produced his first of four legs of the 'Impregnable Quadrilateral.' It was also the grandiose gathering in which this scarce 1930 Amateur program was distributed to paying customers on the hallowed grounds, now quickly approaching 100 years since that feat undoubtedly worthy events and publicity to commemorate it. Upon Jones' winning putt in the finals falling, “Hats filled the air,” wrote author Mark Frost in his title 'The Grand Slam.' O.B. Keeler's eyewitness account reported that the people of St. Andrews lifted Jones on their shoulders for a brief moment. The match play for Jones would include finishing off Cyril Tolley all square in that match prior to pulling away, downing George Voigt in the semifinals and defeating 1923 Amateur Champion Roger Wethered in the finals 7 and 6. Notably it would be one Grand Slam that he would start while the other was completed - the sporting hero notching the career Grand Slam at the 1930 Amateur, his final original major to win.

Pre-WWII programs hailing from the United Kingdom have always been tougher acquisitions then their stateside counterparts, with this holding true as we have had the pleasure of presenting five 1930 US Amateur programs since 2009 and this being just the first 1930 Amateur. Many consider this to be the linchpin of the Grand Slam four program checklist and final satisfied for the few elite hobbyists to complete the significant run.

Bobby Jones' complex history with St. Andrews started as a young golfer with a temper in 1921, to a grand slam winner in 1930, all the way through his 1958 Freedom of the City Presentation. The St Andrews Honorary Citizenship ceremony acceptance speech by Jones included his famous line, "I could take out of my life everything except my experiences at St Andrews and I would still have had a rich and full life." His 1930 Amateur win there certainly a high point in that timeline.

In strong black text below the Royal & Ancient cross of St Andrews is the following down the soft front cover. 'Amateur Golf Championship at St. Andrews - Official Programme for Tuesday, 27th May 1930. Tuesday, May 27th' along with a quick message from R&A Secretary Henry Gullen and the pair of local causes receiving proceeds from tournament revenue generated. This sandstone orange program has been preserved to very good condition, especially when compared to its few existing counterparts, very light wear on cover and select light discoloring on inside pages found only upon thorough inspection. Advanced libraries of major championship programs or Bobby Jones literature, perhaps those with an emphasis on St Andrews, or even an investor, all will have a vested interest in this marquee lot.
