Brown's Patent 'Thistle' Montrose N.B. Rake/Water Iron - Rare 1st of Four Brown Rake Irons

The first of four Brown rake iron iterations is not the 'Major', 'General' or perforated cleek, but less prevalent 'Thistle' with just six 'teeth' and no filigree cosmetic design on face presented here. The 'Browns Patent - Montrose, N.B.' oval stamp is found on the backside of the head, strong and legible on this example. 'The Clubmakers Art' author Jeff Ellis also stated on page 262 more generally speaking, "Brown's rake irons, or water irons as they are sometimes called, are among the most famous of all golf collectibles. Mr. James Brown was a blacksmith in Montrose, North Britain." This seldom seen and highly collectible vintage club remains in good condition, as exhibited in the accompanying lot photos of this lot that is now approximately 120 years old. Highly coveted and one of the leaders in the club and antique golf category, don't let this one elude you any longer. 37"
