Tiger Woods would return to the same site in his home state of California in which he made his PGA Tour debut just six years prior, this time at Valencia. Woods would battle Billy Mayfair before falling in a playoff in 1998 as runner-up, a finish he would duplicate the next year and closest he came to winning the Los Angeles Open. "The best player on the tour" as Mayfair correctly assessed after that tournament had the entire hometown crowd behind him that Sunday and week. Woods came back for his first time with a green jacket in his wardrobe and inked this flag on the top with his time-period, ever-changing signature formation.
Tiger was in good company. Uniform black sharpie time-period 1998 signatures from top members of the field with winning years in parenthesis: Tiger Woods, Payne Stewart, Phil Mickelson (2008 & 2009), Nick Faldo (1997), Fuzzy Zoeller, Tom Kite (1993), Fred Couples (1990 & 1992), Tom Lehman, Peter Jacobsen and Craig Stadler (1996). Accompanying this lot is the 1998 Nissan LA Open green ticket that this lucky patron used to obtain access to the tournament and see Tiger Woods and the others that week.
