1887 'Golfing' By W. & R. Chambers
"In bringing before the public a new work on Golf, containing fresh and reliable data concerning the ancient game, the Publishers do so in the belief that the want of such a manual has long been felt," the 1887 'Golfing: A Handbook to the Royal & Ancient Game' by W.R. Chambers and published out of Edinburgh and London preface reads: The publication then delves into the pre-20th century state of the game through a collection of passages and accompanying drawings by illustrator Ranald M. Alexander. Numerous references to top clubs and golfers of the time, such as Royal and Ancient St Andrews and Horace Hutchison respectively are highlighted throughout. This 1887 book includes an element of humor, a theme for the challenging game that has stood the test of time. The red boards are in good, worn condition and the binding remains intact. Please view the accompanying photos for best condition description of this 137-year-old read. Gilchrist’s Guide to Golf Collectibles values this book at $2,750.
