1870 The Edinburgh Evening Courant Late 19th Century Newspaper - Allan Robertson Monument in St Andrews
February 4th. Article reads: ST ANDREWS-MONUMENT TO ALLAN ROBERTSON.-The members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews have erected a monument to the memory of golf's greatest champion, Allan Robertson. The monument is an obelisk in freestone, executed by Mr James Kirk, sculptor, Pilmour Links, St Andrews. The site is twenty-five yards west of St Regulus' Tower, on the margin of the walk. The north side of the obelisk, that facing the walk, contains the insignia of the game in full relief-the cross clubs and balls, full size, with the motto "Far and Sure. 29 laurel, enclosing the initials "A. R." The east, The south side contains a wreath of a bust of the deceased, very well executed in- deed, and a good likeness. The inscription is under the bust, and is as follows:-"In memory of Allan Robertson, who died 1st September 1857. Aged 44 years. He was greatly esteemed for his personal worth, and for many years was distinguished as the champion golfer of Scotland.” The golf reference is marked with two dots for ease of location.
