c1840's Leather Feathery Golf Ball in Great Condition
Feathery golf balls are the cornerstone of any vintage golf ball collection lucky enough to have one, with this example a nice and tight exemplar from the circa 1840's. Perhaps never used, a condition report would give praise to this specimen from nearly two centuries ago - best visually depicted in the accompanying lot photos. The time-consuming processes involved in creating a feather ball ensured that the price was out of reach of the masses. Though expensive, this type of ball had great flight characteristics and made the wooden ball obsolete almost immediately. The leather was cut in two, three or four lobes then fanned out like petals of a flower, three of the sides would be then be sewn together by hand on the inside edge, then boiled goose feathers would be pushed into the open end and finally sewn together.
It is hard and comes from a longtime collector of both early golf balls and clubs. His 19th century golf equipment exhibit has been featured at his club here in the southeast, where he is the historian. Only recently has he started to letting go of pieces, in effort to pare down his carefully curated collection. That gentleman purchased this ball from a UK auction house a handful of years ago. To reiterate, It is very hard with no give what-so-ever. Finally check this box in your collection with this high-grade example from nearly 200 years ago. Included in this lot is a glass dome protecting the ball perched on a wood pedestal and base for superior presentation. 1.6oz
