Ben Hogan Signed 1953 US Open Program

Across the black background contrasting the light gray US Open Trophy on the front cover of this 1953 US Open at Oakmont program is the legendary champion Ben Hogan's meticulous silver marker signature. Rare is an accurate descriptor for this specific signed publication that laid out the tournament prior to the historical results were achieved, as this is only the fourth occasion in which we have presented an exemplar with Hogan's penmanship. Remembering the 1953 US Open first must be prefaced by the events of the year itself. The 1953 season for Ben Hogan was appropriately deemed the 'Triple Crown of Golf' after improbable wins at The Masters, The US Open and The Open Championship. The Open Championship overlapped the 1953 PGA Championship, keeping Hogan from having a shot to win all four majors that year. During the second leg, Hogan got off to a fast start at the 1953 U.S. Open when he shot a 67 in the first round and went on to complete the rare dominant wire-to-wire win. Hogan shot a 72 in the second round and went on to win by six strokes over Sam Snead and the field. The historic Oakmont Country Club has hosted nine U.S. Open tournaments. The win at Oakmont Country Club in 1953 marked Hogan's fourth and final U.S. Open triumph.

What once set back Oakmont patrons 50 cents, is now star in the program category - a highly valued signed program by the late champion with the sweet swing and matching results. Hogan started with a gold marker signature above, but experienced writing implement difficulties. Inclusion of this Ben Hogan signed '53 Open at Oakmont program from his historic run in any established golf library is necessary. James Spence Authentication (JSA) has reviewed this signature and their auction letter of authenticity comes with this lot.
