1958 Los Angeles Open Pro-Celebrity 2nd Place Trophy
The lights do not get much brighter than those in Los Angeles, California and the tournaments didn't get much larger than the Los Angeles Open in the 1950's. Its Pro-Am followed suit, engaging the local community consisting of celebrities the likes of Bing Crosby - a man that knew a thing or two about Pro-Am tournaments in California (i.e. the clambake). Here is the impressive and sizeable runner-up hardware presented at the 1958 Los Angeles Open Pro-Celebrity in which Crosby was a contestant, just prior to the first PGA Tour event of the 1958 year. It's awarded second place team, engraved on the base nameplate, was headed by 3-time PGA Tour winner Don Fairfield, along with L. Jeffries, E. Janss, and G. Mauch. Engraving around the trophy bowl reads "32nd Los Angeles Open Golf Tournament - January 2nd 1958 - Pro-Celebrity Event." Atop this trophy is the figural golfer mid-swing, two handles on the bowl and more decorative elements found around the base of the tiered trophy itself. 8 years prior to this, it would be at the LA Open that Ben Hogan would make his comeback after a life-threatening car accident and four years prior to Jack Nicklaus playing his first professional tournament (pro debut would be paid Orange Bowl Classic alongside Palmer, Player and Snead December 30, 1960). This trophy presents in very good condition, as depicted in the accompanying lot photos. 7" x 6" x 19"
