Riviera of Las Vegas Hall of Fame Golf Classic Champion Trophy Hosted by Dimaggio & Brown
Joe Dimaggio and Jim Brown, Bronx Bomber and World Champion Cleveland Brown, co-sponsored the 1981 Riviera Hall of Fame Golf Classic that brought together a group of 40 standout athletes in their respective sports for an elevated golf outing in the sin city. It wasn't Dimaggio's agent that made the calls to these household names, it would be Joe Dimaggio himself as he wrote in his journal on April 1, 1981 - of course they answered. Dimaggio and Brown would team up again for the 2nd annual tournament the following year. The list of phone numbers included that of NFL Hall of Famer and 1946 MVP Bill Dudley who did it all for the Steelers, Lions and then Redskins. Dudley's athletic prowess translated into a win in the Dimaggio-Brown Hall of Famers only tournament and this massive 9" x 9" x 16 1/2" dimpled golf ball on tee branded with the tournament designation in relief displayed on the wooden base, complete with an engraved nameplate that included both Joe Dimaggio and Joe Brown's facsimile signatures! That single Joe Dimaggio journal page referenced prior discussing a day in the life of Jolten' Joe would go public after a local man paid $2,500 for it in 2007. The Las Vegas Review-Journal said the event "could very well be the greatest gathering of sports celebrities of the modern era in one place at one time." What was suspected was confirmed at the tournament that ended with this very trophy presented to its champion.
