Penfold Man On Rectangular Base First Edition (Gap Between Legs) Dating To Late 1920’s
Preserved nearly 100 years to unimprovable condition is this late 1920's first edition version of the Penfold Man display statue constructed with a gap between his legs and jet black pipe in mouth. A staple in the ever popular point of sale advertising figure statue category alongside its companion pieces the Dunlop Man, Silver King and Queen, and North British Scottish Terrier. The Penfold Man was strategically placed in pro shops in the 1920-40s as advertising, with obvious visual intrigue to the golfing consumer. The slogan "He Played a Penfold" is in raised, white print on the front of the black base. The substantial size and excellent condition of this piece is sure to catch the eye of many bidders. Founded in 1927 by Albert Ernest Penfold, Penfold Golf Ltd. was a British manufacturer of golf balls, gloves, and other equipment. The advertising manufacturer's original red and white circle sticker on the bottom of the base reads 'Another Display by Harris & Sheldon Ltd. Woodgate - Longhborough.'
