John Duncan Dunn's Personal Dollond Pocket Barometer #6381 with 'J.D.D.-E.A.M. 1909'

"Pocket barometer having 1¾” silvered dial, calibrated in inches of mercury with a range from 23 – 31" and with an outer altimetric scale from 0-8,000 feet, and marked with standard meteorological terms, “Rain, Change, Fair,” the lower portion signed by the maker, “Dollond, London” and serial “No ----.” Blued steel pointer, set under beveled glass contained within rotating bezel with fine index. Conventional good quality single capsule movement, marked “27/10/09,” barrel form oxidised brass case, compensation port to rear set at 8 o’clock. Suspension loop and pinned bow. Contained within its original, very fine oxblood Moroccan leather over wood, imperial purple silk and velvet lined case, with gold blocked maker’s cartouche, “Dollond, London” to inside lid, snap closure on a button release. A quality item in good condition, the brass case retaining most of its oxidized finish, the verso with some wear, the dial in very good condition. The leather case retaining much of its original high gloss finish, the leather over the button missing. The lid silk and lower case velvet with vibrant colour. The instrument serviced and inspected, on test it shows good sensitivity and transition. A good original pocket barometer."

After moving from Scotland to America in 1897 John Duncan Dunn (1872-1951), grandson of Willie Dunn, became assistant professional to his uncle Willie Jr. at the Ardsley CC in New York. Three years later, in 1900, he took over as manager of the Bridgeport Gun Implement Company (BGI Co) golf club division. That is where he produced, most notably, the famous 1-piece driver - a patent he had carried with him since 1894. That same turn-of-the-century year Duncan Dunn was the course architect of Ekwanok CC in Vermont, and later added The Catalina Island GC in California, Belleair Country Club West Course in Belleair, Florida and others to his portfolio. Finally, John Duncan Dunn imparted much of his knowledge of the game as the golf author of titles 'A. B. C. of Golf' (1916), 'Intimate Golf Talks' (1920), and 'Natural Golf' (1931). Through his great-granddaughter Catherine Dunn, we now have the pleasure of offering never before seen items from his family's estate in this auction.
