Original Bobby Jones 1930 US & British Amateur/US & British Open Grand Slam Etching - Framed

Artist William Steene's 1930 Grand Slam print showcased here was inspired by an image of Bobby Jones in his 1927 title “Down the Fairway,” described by O.B. Keeler as perhaps the best photograph ever taken of Jones. Detail, texture and a wide range of value were emphasized by Steene as he captured Jones addressing the ball while looking right at the work's observer. The prized and seldom seen golf art hobby entry is signed by its creator with pencil in the bottom righthand corner. Underlining the subject are his four 1930 major victories, US Amateur, US Open, British Amateur and British Open and his name 'Robert T Jones.' George Trevor, sportswriter for the New York Sun, would phrase Jones' four Major triumphs in 1930 as Jones "stormed the impregnable quadrilateral of golf." This event captivated the minds of most 1930's Americans whether they were golf fans or not, offering the opportunity to see one of the grandest moments in the Golden Age of Sport, Bobby Jones' accomplishment as the only player to win the pre-Masters era Grand Slam.

William Steene (1887-1965) born in upstate New York, perfected his craft at the Art Student's League and National Academy of Design in New York City prior to studying under Colarossi and Julian in Paris. His work could be found in primarily the southern United States at War memorials, to court houses and universities. This artist rendering of Bobby Jones perfectly captures the youthful jones in celebration of his incredible 1930 feat that shook the sports world. 21" x 26"
