1947 Ryder Cup US & British Team Signed Program Inc. Honorary Captains Hagen & Wood
With food rationing still in effect in Great Britain, the first post World War II Ryder Cup was pulled together in 1947 as an attempt to return the golfing world back to the way things had been prior to the horrors of war. Heavy rain saturated the course for both the opening day foursome matches and the 10 singles matches the second and final day. An estimated crowd of 5,000 trudged through mud throughout the matches. Despite these unfavorable conditions the condition of the listed 1947 program is in great condition.
Spectacularly, this exemplar includes time-period penmanship of each player on either side of the isle along with that of the A-list Honorary Captains Walter Hagen and Craig Wood. The victorious complete US super-team signed near their black and white image in the 'Highlights of the American Players' program article. These include that of prized playing-captain Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Jimmy Demaret, Byron Nelson, Herman Keiser, Lloyd Mangrum, Lew Worsham, Ed Oliver, Dutch Harrison and Herman Barron. The first Ryder Cup since 1937 turned into a 11-1 route of the USA over Great Britain on home soil. Collectors of Ryder Cup programs are often missing this one in such great condition, and we have never seen one signed by each United States participant both on and off the Portland Golf Club course. Please inspect the accompanying lot photos not just for the gleaming condition, but high-grade signatures from the dominant victors.
