Babe & George Zaharias Original Forrest Hills Wooden Roy M. Barlow Clubhouse Sign
This Babe & George Zaharias Original Forrest Hills Wooden Roy M. Barlow (head professional) Clubhouse Sign is original to the former Forrest Hills Golf and Country Club located in the Forrest Hills development in north Tampa. Hand painted, sizable, with hand-hammered metal framing and hand painted, 'Babe and George Zaharias Owners' is written in stylized blue paint in a gold painted stripe. Barlow's name is carved out, giving depth to the piece. The Moorish/Mediterranean style architecture was popular in many areas of the Florida land boom. The course and clubhouse were built in 1926 and became an attraction to the locals along with the snowbirds and foreign investors. When Babe and George Zaharias purchased the course in 1950 it had begun to decline, the owners were anxious to move back to their roots. The Zaharias’ brought cash to the table and closed the deal in less than thirty days. This was the resurrection for the Forrest Hills Country Club that was given fresh paint inside and out, as well as a course redesign from the original yardage of 7192 down to a more preferred 6200-6500 yards. A signed letter of provenance from Babe Zaharias Foundation Founder Hal Shaw comes with this lot. 37" x 10" x 2 1/2"
