1926 Bobby Jones 'Defeated at the British Amateur' Sweeping Action Original Wire Photo
Gracious in defeat after conquering his temper, Bobby Jones was captured in this clear, original photo shaking the hand of his adversary Andrew Jamieson as the two walk off the final hole of the 1926 British Amateur Championship quarterfinal match. Jones' friend, writer O. B. Keeler, wrote: "In all my life I have never head anything as lonely as the cry of the pewit in that twilight on the rolling Muirfield course, nor was I ever so lonesome." This work of the Underwood & Underwood photographer features that scene on the green at Muirfield Golf Club.
Bobby Jones is known for creating the Augusta National Golf Course and the Masters Golf Tournament. A little known fact is that he designed the first ever set of "matched clubs". He won 7 Majors, including 1923-1926-1929 and 1930; the British Open in 1926-1927 and 1930. He also won 6 amateur tournaments and played on 5 US Walker Cup Teams, being Captain in 1928 and 1930. He is in the World Golf Hall of Fame.
'Jesse Sweetser, of the Siwanoy Club, Mount Vernon, New York, and A.F. Simpson, of the Lothianburn Club, Edinburgh, were finalists in the British amateur golf championship at Muirfield. Photo: Bobby Jones (U.S.A.), who was defeated, congratulating his opponent, Jamieson.' The verso of this photo carries the popular New York photography studio Underwood & Underwood stamping on the verso along with the affixed corresponding caption. 8" x 10."
