Babe Zaharias' Personal Wilson Golf Clubs Gifted to & Used by Ann Gregory w/ 'BZD' Headcovers
Ann Moore Gregory, or for those closer to her on the LPGA Tour simply 'The Queen', was as the USGA put in their 2018 website article 'one of golf's true pioneers' and first African-American contestant at a USGA championship! Gregory made history at the 1956 US Women's Open at Northland Country Club in Duluth, Minnesota and would compete in 27 total USGA major championships during her career. "Gregory elevated the status of African Americans with grace and courage during an era of discrimination," The United States Golf Association also eloquently stated. Her daughter JoAnn Gregory Overstreet has carried on Gregory's legacy through both memories and memorabilia including trophies, medals, scrapbooks and other ephemera. The USGA acquired that historic 1956 US Women's Open used bag from The Babe Zaharias Golf Foundation, proudly on display during their Black History Month display. From the same source of the latter comes Babe Zaharias' personal used Wilson Golf Clubs set that was gifted to and used by her friend and fellow trailblazer Ann Gregory. Zaharias, a Wilson Staff member, used these Wilson golf clubs with 'BZD' in gold on the headcovers. Two significant bag tags are found on this flannel patterned bag set with Babe Zaharias' name up the large, main pocket. Zaharias' Palma Ceia metal tag with 'AMG' stamped on the bottom. The second, Ann Gregory's Municipal Golf Courses Patt Jewett GC and Valley Hi GC. This set includes a 1-4 Strata Block Woods Set, 2-9 Wilson Top-Notch irons, Sand Iron, Pitching Niblick, and a Wilson 'Willie Hoare' Putter (a signature line at the time).
