1903 Sterling Medal Crowborough Beacon Golf Club

This small but elegant medal resides in its original fitted case. It was crafted by goldsmith and silversmith G. Langfords on Chertsey Road in Woking and bears their label on the inside case lid. The medal was awarded to J. C. Stebens for the Buckhurst Cup competition in 1903. The front of the medal bears what may be the club logo at the time surrounded by a ring with “Crowborough Beacon Golf Club.” The rear of the medal is inscribed “J.C. Stebens, Buckhurst Cup 1903, 2 Down” There is a hallmark on the rear consisting of anchor, lion passant, and d which dates it to Birmingham 1903. The Crowborough Beacon Golf Club dates to 1895 and bears a slight commonality with Augusta National as eight holes on the course were redesigned by Alister Mackenzie as documented by Bernard Darwin in his Crowborough Beacon Golf club handbook of 1934. 1 1/4"
